dissapointed with kunaki - 2008/04/01 20:35I'm just wondering if anyone else had this problem with kunaki: I ordered my evaluation copy and it looked fantastic. The artwork was perfectly rendered. So, I ordered a whole bunch of them, and when they arrived today, it looks like a completely different product. The artwork looks like it was done on a photocopier! The colors are all washed out and its about ten times lighter than the slick looking evaluation copy. I'm horrified! Has anyone else had this happen or had to deal with them with a problem like this? I'm not sure what to do here.... Their website seems to really stress the " we're a vending machine, no returns, etc etc" approach. I'm so bummed......

Re:dissapointed with kunaki - 2008/04/02 04:09I've ordered 3 separate CDs of mine from Kunaki now, in multiple orders, and they've all been great. Sorry to hear you had problems...

Re:dissapointed with kunaki - 2008/04/02 07:52The problem inherent with "on demand" or quick-print digital services, whether they are books, postcards, CDs... whatever... is that the machines are rarely calibrated, and you have no guarantee that the machine that prints your proof copy is the same machine that will print your order. It is a completely case-by-case basis, and if you get stuck on the bum machine that's out of whack, or has a dirty print head, or is out of magenta, well, it's the luck of the draw.
Obviously, when you work with a real print house, you have a contractual guarantee of quality, but you're paying for that perfection! It's definitely a "get what you pay for" mentality.

Re:dissapointed with kunaki - 2008/04/02 11:04I think thats exactly what happened...a machine that was out of magenta. The color is all weird. I emailed Kunaki and they responded very quickly. The are going to send me a return authorization and give a refund and analyze what went wrong. I hope they don't think I'm making too big of a deal out of it. Its still "kind of OK", but definitely not the quality of the eval copy. The image is really light compared to the original. There is also some blurring on the corners (all pixilated looking), and on some of the units, the back image extends into the spine. As I write this I'm starting to wonder if I'm being too picky.... I certainly don't want to abuse their willingness to help, or make them unnecessarily eat a loss... hmmm. I'm hoping to just place the order again when this is all straightened out because their price and ordering method is so perfect for me. I'll give updates as they happen, and in the meantime, anyone's further thoughts on this would be much appreciated....

Re:dissapointed with kunaki - 2008/04/02 16:53you're not being too picky at all, just upset with the end result of what you likely thought about for days, cooking supper, driving to work, falling asleep, and pretty much every other moment.
i'm sorry to hear about the bum out but relieved they're going to help you get what you wanted!
let us know what it looks like when you're done!

Re:dissapointed with kunaki - 2008/04/05 14:56Let us know what happens! I was kind of banking on getting 50 or so Kunaki CDs for my 4/29 show..
If I had my druthers, I'd do a simple sleeve with an insert and printed disc.. My friend did it - but it was more pricey than Kunaki.. and a label paid for it.. so, yeah not even the same situation.. but it was an awesome print option..

Re:dissapointed with kunaki - 2008/04/26 04:46***UPDATE*** So, I sent back the order and They refunded my money and looked into it. They said the eval copy that was done correctly was actually wrong and the bad copies were the way they were supposed to look. I thought that was pretty silly, but since they refunded my money I was OK with it. They suggested I resubmit the product at a higher DPI and so I did. I had to order another copy (they took my free eval copy and didn't grant another one). The new copy looked awesome. Perfect in every way. So I order 50 more. I just got them this afternoon and THEY ARE HORRIBLE!!!! Worse than the first batch. This time it most certainly was NOT the art work. There are lines all over it from dirty print heads or rollers. The lightness problem is even worse. The CD printing is off center showing a bunch of blank whitespace around the edges. None of this was present in the single copy I ordered before the larger batch. THIS IS BULLSH*T!!!!! I can't sent the shipment back because I need these for a show tomorrow. It's embarrassing to put something out there that is so frickin BAD, but this has been delayed so long, I have no choice. I am so disgusted by this company's complete inability to put out a product that is consistently the same. I will never EVER do business with them again. Beware of these guys. I know other's have had good experiences with them, but I see now how you get what you pay for. Apparently this is the reason they are so much cheaper than everyone else. I'd rather pay $4 per unit for something that is decent than pay $1.75 per unit for total crap. Next time it will be Diskmakers or some other more reputable outfit. Kunaki may be tempting, but I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

OK, I've had a chance to calm down. Sorry about the crazy mad raving and ranting of my last post. Maybe I was being a bit over the top. My points are still valid, but in the past few days I've sold a lot of these disks and nobody's complaining about how they look. I'm starting to run out of CDs and...hmmm... do I give it another go? I don't feel like setting this up all over again with a different UPC code, so maybe I'll give them one more chance. We'll see.

Re:dissapointed with kunaki - 2008/04/30 16:26Yeah, that's a major bummer. Sounds like they need better quality control reps on their end, if they're letting stuff go out the door like that.
No matter what, keep in mind the one thing you mentioned: "nobody's complaining about how they look." You are allowed and often required to be a perfectionist when it comes to your own work, but most people will not see the flaws that are smacking you in the face.
As long as the CDs play properly, I'd say give them another go... but don't keep spending money on a product you find inferior! That just tells Kunaki that they don't have to improve.
