Re:RPM Cover Library - 2008/04/24 18:24 Can we interpret slightly?

I played around with a couple of your (I won't say who yet) songs last night and found myself deviating slightly (ever so slightly) from your chord progressions. Not a lot, but I don't want to take artistic license without anyone's consent.

Let me know...

Cheers,

Gary

Re:RPM Cover Library - 2008/04/24 18:29 I would think such reinterpretations were to be expected. If someone wants an exact copy of their song, they can do it themselves, no?

Certainly in the case of my songs anyway, I'd want people to make them theirs. I'd get a lot out of hearing other people's takes on 'em.

Thanks Jim. Yours was one I was enjoying a little license with. I can't work on it today, but I will get a version recorded and posted in a couple of days. Which leads me to another question: Where are we posting these?

Cheers,

Gary

Hiya - announce that the song is finished here, and then post it on your profile page? Only one (I have to say FANTASTIC) cover has been posted so far, but this method seemed to work okay.

Tess

PS - In terms of interpretation, I am working on a Colin Garvey song, which has almost entirely the same arrangement as the original (though it's played by a beginner with a girl's voice) and several others - one of which is a Not Mad song, with quite a different spin. I don't think anyone is expecting a replica...and if they are, they are going to be horribly disappointed...

Re:RPM Cover Library - 2008/04/24 21:43 HAIRPIN (Savigear & Curtis 2008)

I took a hairpin to your portrait
Ripped up the girls that always got in my way
You curse a million times an hour
You've never got anything to say
I took your last piece of gum...I'm done here...

I took a pocket of your sorry ass excuses
I tossed your journal, wasn't worth a look
You'll find your pride and joy on eBay
I ripped the last page from your book
I took your last piece of gum...I'm done here...

You stopped being interesting a long time ago
And now it seems my lust for this life goes deeper than you'll go

I took your last piece of gum
I took your last piece so I could taste like you
So I could taste like you
So I could taste like you

Re:RPM Cover Library - 2008/04/24 23:17 Please feel free to do anything you wish interpreting my music. I think its just a damn exciting project. And as Tess knows, I take liberties myself when I'm doin covers. Isn't that right?

these only work if they're well established chords.

we could be silly and, if you, have no idea what you're playing, use www.sendaprivatemessagetonightdrivingandhe'llfigureitoutforyou.com

(not a real website).

so yeah...im a bit of a music dork. give me your tabs and ill give you your chords.

You certainly took it to a far more exciting place than I did! In the review he did for me, Beckwith said that TLT could really take off but doesn't...well, it does now!

Now, about the mp3 version..?

Ahem, I took several liberties when covering Angie Fights Crime. There is an extra chord in there that seemed to make it work better in the style I did it in - which again, is completely different to the original.

There's no point in having a cover version that's the same as the original IMO.

Re:RPM Cover Library - 2008/04/29 00:48 Right, this one’s for Tess. Or anybody else who fancies a go. Another nice simple 3-chord one; well, there’s some slightly more complicated riffy bits, but I’ve just left them out – the song’ll work without them.
It’s available for download on my myspace page.

I play this one with a capo on the 9th fret.

While My Lover Lies Asleep

Em
Em-------------------------
Throw my emptiness away
--------------------------Am7
To the lake and to the dawn
-------------Em
I couldn’t see
-------------------------------
And could it be another day
-----------------------------Am7
Another chance to be reborn
-------------Em
I don’t believe

D---------------Am7------Em
While my lover lies asleep
D---------------Am7------Em
While my lover lies asleep

I won’t be what someone made
But what I made is made of sand
Just blown away
And I don’t want to let it fade
I’ll take it back into my hands
And let it play

While my lover lies asleep
While my lover lies asleep

[instrumental]
Am7----Em--------Am7----D---Am7---Em
----------------Am7-----------------Em
And can you feel her watching me
-----------D--------------------Em
Can you feel her watching me
-----------Am7
Can you feel her watching
D-------------Am7---Em
Feel her watching me

While my lover lies asleep
While my lover lies asleep
Pray the lord her love to keep
While my lover lies asleep

ALTERNATIVE:

Capo on the 4th fret.
For Em read Am
For Am7 read Dm7
For D read G

Ok, it's up in my profile. You can't miss it, it's called Gray Rainbow-JimTyrell Cover

It's me and my two acoustics. Hope you like it Jim.

Cheers,

Gary

Re:RPM Cover Library - 2008/04/29 15:06 Dang! Sorry, Jim, I mispelled your last name. Anyway, it's up for everyone to hear. Hopefully I didn't mangle it to much on you. I am not the best finger-picker on the gtr...

Cheers,

Gary

Re:RPM Cover Library - 2008/04/29 15:18 Oh, this is great. Shades of T-Bone Burnett here. A really nice take on the song. Can I get the mp3 from you so I can post it on my web site?

Wow, thanks for the compliment Jim. After I posted it I listened to your original and thought "Uh-oh, I am not so sure about this after all." I misinterpreted how you played the chords, so I took more liberty than I thought I was taking. Relieved to hear you like it.

Send me a PM with your e-mail address and I will send you the MP3.

Cheers,

Gary

Re:RPM Cover Library - 2008/04/29 15:46 Oh yeah, no worries at all. You took the song and made it yours, and that's what the best covers do. I'll be listening to this one a bunch. Thanks again!
