08 Compliation Project - 2008/04/19 20:43 So let's get this going!

Disk #1 - Americana / Country / Roots
Disk #2 - Alt / Indie / Pop
Disk #3 - Ambient / Atmospheric
Disk #4 -Tribal / Meditation /World (I HATE the new age label -- anybody got anything for this -- pretty broad including experimental forms)
Disk #5 - Electronica / Synthesis
Disk #6 - Blues / Jazz
Disk #7 - Rock
Disk #8 - Other

I have (or very soon will) create a forum entry for each disk. Here's how this works.

Stage 1 - Nominations

Post in the forum a list of bands with a song or two (not just bands if possible). Post in the appropriate forum under the proper disk. This will continue for a given period of time until we get enough nominations. Nominees need to reply to my contact with permission (and desire) to be on the disk. You're E-mail to me constitutes permission to use your song for this one project and no other purpose. Self nominations are welcome!

Stage 2 - Voting

When a particular disk gets enough nominees we will vote. A new forum entry will be created entitled "Disk #X - title - VOTING". Here you post your votes. If you don't want to do so publicly you can send me a PM or E-mail.

Stage 3- HiFi collection
I need the music in HiFi. That means if you are picked for a disk you need to sned me a disk, a file, etc with my specification of format (for files). I can't use 18-bit MP3s. I like FLAC if we're using files. This can be your ready-for-release song, not necessarily as it was when it was submitted to RPM in Feb. It shouldn't be a total redo that is not the same song either.

Stage 4- Mastering
I'll master the disk, song sequence, etc. then post it on Virb (or other since Virb sems to be sucking now). Everyone gets to hear it, comment, and I'll make adjustments as necessary. When a disk is done. It's done. No revisiting -- I'll be busy enough.

Stage 5 - Production
When all the disks are done, I'll master them in Kunaki's format and we'll get the set of eight made. Everyone on RPM can get copies from Kunaki. You can NOT sell these disks to anyone as they are made by RPM for RPM. You can give them as gifts, etc. provided there is NO profit. If you are a nominee and don't like this idea, then tell me and you won't qualify.

Re:08 Compliation Project - 2008/04/19 21:15 I'll make a play list of all nominations int he Jukebox to make it easy to listen to the songs.

Are play lists shareable in the 08 JB?

Re:08 Compliation Project - 2008/04/19 22:56 A fe questions I've been asked I;ll answer for the benefit of all:

1) Can I be on more than one disk?
Generally, no. If you get nominated for two and get enough votes for both, I'll ask you to pick.

2) What if I don't like the genre I'm in?
Tell me and I'll move it, but keep in mind you'll be judge against all the others in that genre ... so as long as it's appropriate.

3) What's the album names?
The creative process here on RPM will name them
So far,
Disk 7 is "The Last Refuge of Scoundrels" (decided last year)

And I like "Other" for disk 8 just cause it means so much to all of us. But that is certainly changeable.

Last year's disks were called
#1 - "Roadside Diner"
#2 - "Indiescent Exposure"
#3 - "Standing in the Sky"
#4 - "Looking Glass Dreams"
#5 - "The Space in the Between"
#6 - "Jazzed to be Blue"

We have all the other suggested names here in the forums we'll go over and get any new ideas as well.

4) What is the music on disk #4 like?

Generally, it is beatless. Meditation music has a focus like a repeating drum beat or is completely the opposite with sound that asynchroniously changes slowly over time. It gives a focus but doesn't get in the way. Listen to disk #4 from last year for ideas. If it is electronic with a beat if probably goes on #5.

5) And what about #3?
Ambient is easy. Atmospheric is music that sets an atmosphere that is usually big and wide open. Can be acoustic or eletronic, generally beatless but can have rhythm, modes, and motifs. Basically kind of "feel" music like soundtrack.

6) If there's more then one band member how do we vote?

Post all your votes in the same fourm entry. Please don't use you band members votes yourself. If they aren't actually voting, don't list them.

7) Can I vote for myself?
You'd be crazy not to. This disks are amazing -- you want on them.

8) I don't like te song everyone has picked?

Withdraw your nomination I guess, but really, accept it. You are you worst critic. If people are digging it and you're getting nominations and votes -- it's good stuff. Don't sweat it and just let us enjoy your stuff.

Re:08 Compliation Project - 2008/04/21 13:35 I know it would be more work, Mick (yeah you just hate doing this stuff, right?) but I would love to see a comp disk for instrumental acoustic guitar. A lot of people (okay, three!) seem to have nominations in that "genre" (and there is quite a bit of those kinds of tunes if you look around RPM) and I hate to see them get lumped in Other or Americana/Country/Roots. Just lobbying for my favorite genre, which always seems to get short shrift.

Re:08 Compliation Project - 2008/04/21 18:35 You know... while Mick has oh, so graciously offered up his time and energy on the compilation project (who knows why!)... he's not the only one who can do it.

I encourage everyone who would like to see specific types of compilations to make it happen! At the base level, all it takes is some willingness to deal with a lot of emails, accept files, and be a bit of a manager

So, which one are you volunteering to do, JW?

Carefully consider that word "bit", too. That's the biggest part.

But I can't wait until files start showing up and disks start coming together. That makes it all worth it.

Kavin, I had thought about an acoustic guitar disk and several other disks, but decided to go with the well knowns from last year because it makes the management side easier.

I, like Joshua, encourage anyone else to make a specialty compile disk (and let me know 'cause I'm going to want one).

I thought about a disk of wind instruments without valves or finger holes.

Ah, see... I'm not really asking for a specific one to be made, so I am exempt from my own sage advice! Considering I have about ten other projects that require management and collaboration right now (publishing some books, a regular zine, and the soon-to-launch music label), I'm definitely at my collaborative capacity.

Re:08 Compliation Project - 2008/04/22 01:07 Ha! I love a challenge!

We'll let the dust settle from this compilation frenzy, then think about it. Don't want to cause any confusion or duplicate tracks. That's a good excuse, innit?

Re:08 Compliation Project - 2008/05/20 22:05 Been awhile I know but I been solving problems.

Too make it easy to vote this year I want to put all the nominees in ONE place and have a Flash player for each disk. Everyone can go and listen to all the possible songs in one Jukebox. I was hoping the 08 Bit of Goodness would do this on RPM, but I don't see a way to publish playlists.

So.....I 'm working on setting up a site for this, but I need everyone to send me a 128-bit MP3 of their nominated songs. I'll be sending out E-mails soon .. so be ready.

Re:08 Compliation Project - 2008/05/21 06:13 Mug Shot Wanted

Not having seen last year discs, is there a picture of the artist next to thier submission? A picture of the CD? Logo? Ensignia? Favorite comic book character, like the Waffler?

Re:08 Compilation Project - Status - 2008/06/18 16:48 It seems like we have more artists represented in different categories last year. Any solution on how to choose which cd they will appear on if they get voted onto two or more?

Re:08 Compilation Project - Status - 2008/06/18 17:00 Some have already expressed their desire to be on a certain disk and that's good. I'm planning to make a list of those picked top to bottom of most votes to fewest. THen Start at the top and do the following checks:

1) Do I have their permission?
2) Do I have their HiFi version?
3) Do they want on this disk?

I'll start putting songs on the disks top to bottom until the disk is full of great RPM music including going further down in the list if a shorter song fits.

If you want on a certain disk if you make more then one, let me know.
