Voting: Selections from RPM 2008 - 2008/04/19 04:11Since Mick opened up the floor for discussion and of course voting on Selections from the 2008 RPM Challenge for the complimation disks, I thought I would start the offical thread. Knowing full well that other threads will follow.
Mick would you list the rules from last year that governed what was chosen to be on each disk.
Please be aware that Mick is the master (and masterer) of the RPM complimation disks and will be the arbitrar in all matters pertaining to the 2008 RPM complimation disks.
That said, the floor is yours Master Mick.
That said, I would like to offer the following add on to last years rules. Those artists that have been chosen for NPR play will, by default, be given space on the complimation disk for their music genre.

Re:Voting: Selections from RPM 2008 - 2008/04/19 18:31First of all, pre-emptive thank you for the enormous amount of time and devotion that I imagine is going to be going into this project.
A question...will the songs on the compilation be the RPM versions of all the songs, or in some cases, the "release-ready" versions?

Re:Voting: Selections from RPM 2008 - 2008/04/19 18:51Maybe there should be a rule saying if you have been on an RPM compilation before, you can't be on another one. It should be all new people, each year. That would keep it from having the appearance of a clique, and would guarantee more variety in the music. That is, if enough new people responded to the call. I recall that was kind of a problem, last time, with folks who never answered the messages or didn't come through with song files.
*shrugs* I dunno. Maybe that's not such a good idea, after all. I was very honored to be included on the Jazz/Blues disk, last year, and am still very much hyped up about it. I show the disks to everybody who comes to our house and try to make them listen, even though most of them don't give a flip about RPM or music in general and get very annoyed with me pimping it. But hey. Somebody's always annoyed at me, so I might as well try to do something good for the annoyance.

Re:Voting: Selections from RPM 2008 - 2008/04/19 19:50Kai, while I understand your point, I don't think it's fair to penalize people for being up to the task last year. I think that if people want to be a part of this, they should all be given the same opportunity. No points should be given or taken away due to their participation in the '07 compilations.
I'd imagine that among 8 disks, there's plenty of room to go around. I suppose Mick would be the best judge of this, as he could tell us whether or not there were too many or not enough tracks to deal with.

Re:Voting: Selections from RPM 2008 - 2008/04/19 20:01Yeah, that's why I pretty much immediately started rethinking it as a dumb idea. I think I worry too much about people feeling left out. Personally, I would love to be a part of it, again, but at the same time, i don't want to keep someone else who hasn't had a chance to participate from participating. I also don't want to assume I'd be included just because I would like to be.
Heh... Can you tell I'm sick?! I'm rambling like nobody's business. Someone needs to pat me on the head and say "That's nice, Kai. Take some more delicious cough syrup and go back to bed."

Re:Voting: Selections from RPM 2008 - 2008/04/19 20:25I'm more just an organizer. This is, and should remain, a community event. That said, I make the disks, and in that I do consider myself in charge.
I thought about that too, Kai, but reality is we probably won't get enough new people. I'd like to go with as many new people as we can but at the same time I want to go with the best music we can. Last year probably 60% of the people responded -- eventually. The fact of the matter is some people hang here some don't and if I have to do extra work to contact them I get drained trying to manage people. I'm certainly willing to make contact again and get people going but last year we did have a problem getting music on time.
Since it's voting, I just say go with the votes. When voting, keep in mind the music, not the person. Go fairly for the songs you like best. This place is full of talent -- we'll make some nice disks. Whether or not you participated last year shouldn't matter.
With eight disks we might even find ourselves wanting more then we have. Last year the Jodie Foster came up with a few ands last minute to help complete a couple of disks. With us getting going earlier this year I hope we have active participants.

Ha... I would be utterly HORRIFIED to think I got included last time because of my personality or buddy-buddy-ness instead of the quality of my music.
I'm going to have to figure out a better way to listen to the jukebox, so I can find some songs to vote on, as I can't listen to squat on this lousy internet connection. Jana kindly offered to make me an mp3 disk from a wishlist, but I haven't been able to even get around here enough to make a decent list for him. My votes last year came from among the few CD's I had received and the few mp3's I was able to snag.
