In praise of Mick AND the 2007 Compilation Disks - 2008/04/15 22:13 I got the chance to listen to Mick's (Michelangelo) Spirits CD today for the first time and the two words that came to mind were stunning and professional. I think he could have just repeated song #1 ten times and I still would have been happy. For someone that had to borrow a mandolin, it sounded awfully comfortable in your hands. Just an excellent CD with tons of great songs and musicianship throughout. CD's like this will either inspire me to work harder or just say "What's the use - what am I thinking with my cheesy little CD?" (LOL!).

On a side note, I took a business trip a couple of weeks ago and decided to drive. I took along the 2007 compilation CDs that Mick put together. I only listened to the Americana/Folk/Country, Jazz/Blues and Pop/Rock CD's because I was afraid I might go into some king of trance with the others (ha ha). Not a single weak or "filler" type song to be found anywhere. All of the songs were pleasurable to listen to. I don't want to single any cut out, but I will admit that I listened to Beatnik Turtles' Mason Rocket (Spy Extrodinairre) a bunch of times!! Classic pop/rock at its finest. Viva la 2007 RPM Compilation Disks!

Re:In praise of Mick AND the 2007 Compilation Disk - 2008/04/16 05:12 Thanks, KVE. Glad you like Aldeles. That mandolin part is a product of about 60 hours of practice in Feb and about 65 takes is precise punch recording! It only sounds comfortable. They real star of that is Dani on the fiddles. Wow! Glad you liked the whole disk in fact and above all thanks for the reminder that on RPM people like music for what it is -- not how it sells. I know Spirits isn't your fav stuff, Kevin, but the fact you can enjoy it for what it is, is what RPM is all about.

But don't be too, humble. Your 08 disk is pretty sweet too. Got it in the mail, and it is a fine piece of work. I like it even better then 07.

And as for those compilations, they ARE DAMN GOOD because of the people on them. I listen to them all the time and will continue to do so.

How about we start rounding up ideas for 08 compilations?

Oh yeah! And maybe this time there can be a rock record or two!

And one of them can be named "The Last Refuge of Scoundrels".

Tangmo never forgets.

Re:In praise of Mick AND the 2007 Compilation Disk - 2008/04/16 06:48 Well, add our awed praises to this heap.

We got the CD yesterday afternoon - and it hasn't left the primary position on the car CD player.. up to 6 full plays right now. (And yes, it quite handily passes The Car Test. With flying colors.)

It's a friggin' incredible disc - and Mick, you do yourself a great dishonor by thinking no one would listen to it. Bull hockey. It is out and out excellent. (Wendy's exact review, expurgated for family-audience eyes:" IT'S F****** BRILLIANT!")

So much for downing yourself, dude.

And all that mando practice paid off big time - as well as the engineering. (I didn't hear a single punch!)

Outstanding work, Mr. Mick. Now if I can only get it out of the car and onto the studio monitors...

kirk (& wendy), aka acl, aka... awww hell, who doesn't know this by now?

P.S. Oh, and our continued kudos on the 2007 compilation as well... with Spirits clouding our vision, we'd completely forgotten about that set...

That would be 6 CDs. Here are the links to all six CDs on Virb. Each site has two CDs posted.

Re:In praise of Mick AND the 2007 Compilation Disk - 2008/04/16 19:45 I'm still playing my compilation disks, regularly. It never ceases to amaze me how much really cool music RPM'ers put out!

Good God, I need to go back to freakin' bed. I somehow managed to post this before I was finished typing. (-.-) I is a nitwit.

Just wanted to add that I'm with Tangmo. "Last Refuge of Scoundrels" is too good a title to leave out!

Then I ask you to define "other" or, put up a bunch of tracks and thrown them together a la mix tape.

I suppose it might be possible to improve on the rules and procedure from last year, though I don't really know how.

But I think some tweaking could be done to the categories. Those were the categories suggested and/or mandated by Hear! and they didn't want a Rock compilation, and possibly some other categories.

I think with some thought (and guidance from Mick) ya'll could come up with something more representative without ramping up the number of disks too bad. We were initially planning on seven last year until the Rock disk died (or was killed by Hear!).

Assuming no other outift has a say, ya'll could do better.

If that's the case, then it might be a bold move to do mixed 'genre' disks concentrating more on 'feel'. I don't know of anybody more capable than Mick to sus out playlists based on any categorization scheme you guys might come up with.

Just my thoughts.

Re:In praise of Mick AND the 2007 Compilation Disk - 2008/04/17 06:12 Yeah, we need to do the rock disk. I think the categories were pretty good last year and I submit them again this year. I'm up for maybe 8 total.

We have to do
    Ambient / Atmospheric
    Pop / Alt / Indie
Rock (Yes, of course, Scoundels it is!)
    Americana / Folk / Country
    Electronica

I love the meditation disk from last year -- it is one of my personal favorites but we can switch it out with ACL's "Other" which I love as a title.

I think Jazz / Blues is still good too, though finding enough to fill an album is kind of tough here on RPM. We were a little broad with "Jazz" last year but what a great disk anyway. It smokes!

So, suggestions ? What's all on your mind? My mastering console is almost empty and it wants music.

If we do 8 disks it will be $19.60 + shipping per person.

And let's get a visual arts guy on board quick this year!

Re:In praise of Mick AND the 2007 Compilation Disk - 2008/04/17 06:13 Wow. I apparently was more outside the loop than I thought. I wasn't even aware of the compilation until December...and who is Hear!? What's the issue with the Rock compilation for RPM? Is it too broad a catergory? I could imagine there are alot of bands that fall into that catergory. Was the content offensive in some way? If so, we can break the Mofo to friggin left, fo shizzle my nizzle. I don't matter to me, Shiznit! Woo, that was like an out-of-body experience.

BTW, Last Refuge of Scoundrels as a title is dead on. I'm having a T-shirt made. But back to the what's what. How does someone get last years series?

Re:In praise of Mick AND the 2007 Compilation Disk - 2008/04/17 06:27 I'm very interested in this, but I don't know what the rules are for it. Is there like a poll or something where people vote on what's to be included in the compilations?

Re:In praise of Mick AND the 2007 Compilation Disk - 2008/04/17 06:42 Lyndell - The compilations were to submit to Hear music (Starbucks) and we were almost in when our contact quit (got fired, whatever). I tried an open submission but they canceled them a few weeks. Then got a "project" initiated finally, submitted again, and never heard back. End results is six kick ass disks for RPMers.

Courtney - Yeah. It's a nomination, then vote system.

Give me a few more days rest (I've been mastering RPMers non-stop since Mar 15th) and I'll post the details, create the necenssary forum entries, and get this thing going again. I can't wait for this year's disks.

But grab a chair, this process isn't fast. But it is worth the wait.

Needs:
Artists or two for disk covers. Rob Stewart (BPK) ran with it last year and set the bar pretty high.
Lots of voters. Get your RPM friends back online!
Nominations

But right now we need to finalize categories.

Ideas?

Re:In praise of Mick AND the 2007 Compilation Disk - 2008/04/17 07:03 Woo! I love this idea, can't wait for another group of compilation CDs.

I've been avoiding my computer and making music since about a week after the challenge ended this time -- burned myself out a bit, switched jobs, etc... so I have some catching up to do, as far as getting back to people about the group of amazing CDs I've received in the mail, etc.

I'm sure I'll have plenty of nominations for the compilation. Great stuff.
