the first song I ever wrote was a song called "Fifth Day". Three chords - G. B, and A...in constant repetition...think acoustic Screeching Weasel. I wrote it for a girl I was trying to impress when I was 16. It was an embarrassing failure - not the song, but the intent. .........ok, fine...the song was nothing too great either...whatever Post edited by: favored, at: 2007/01/30 14:28

Re:the first song you ever wrote... - 2007/01/30 15:43My first song was written--or I should say, improvised--when I was 4 years old. It was called "Blue Bird" and it went on for so long that all my little friends finally gave up and walked away from me to go back to playing cops and robbers. Didn't faze me. I kept right on singing and making up words as I went along. I wish someone had written it down for me or recorded it. I'm sure it would be weird to hear it, now.
First real song, actually played on an instrument and then written down by me was a kind of lamentation for a special person in my life who had just died. I still have the lyrics and chords written down, somewhere, but I only played it twice, after I wrote it. I was 13 years old.

Re:the first song you ever wrote... - 2007/01/30 15:52The first song I ever wrote turned out to be an unconscious rip-off of something else. But the second song I ever wrote was my own -- as far as I know. It's called Out Of Your Brain.
Since then, I've reworked it a number of times, and I've posted the latest version here.

Great story Kai....
It would be amazing to hear something from such a young obsessive-compulsive mind...

Re:the first song you ever wrote... - 2007/01/30 16:03i think the first complete song i ever wrote was for my all girl punk band when i was 14. It was called Phat Fat, and the subject matter was about the consequences of indulging in Betty Crocker, Little Debbie, and Sara Lee treats.
unfortunately I don't think we ever recorded that masterpiece.

Re:the first song you ever wrote... - 2007/01/30 16:06hm. i think i was...15. at least the first song i recorded. it was called overload. it sounded like i'd recorded it in a shoe, i have no idea how it got so muffled. but it was a songsong, and it's not...terrible. i wouldnt let anyone listen to it though, i dont know if i ever have. its embarassing. i do remember writing my first song for a girl, called i wish i could be everything to you, and giving it to her, being so shy and embarassed, and then later she told me her dad liked it. i threw up in the shit in my pants.

Re:the first song you ever wrote... - 2007/01/30 16:13I wrote my first song, an instrumental, around Thanksgiving of 2005, using a MOD music format tracker. I called it "Attacking the Base".
It's actually pretty good, though the instruments are low quality.
Now, if we're talking vocal songs and that, in September '06 I wrote a song called "Kittens With Lasers" for a contest. I finished it over the course of a day, and when it was finished I stored away the MP3 and started over with the same subject. The lyrics in the first version were very much squashed into short sections and I sounded really really really more nasal than usual. >_<

Re:the first song you ever wrote... - 2007/01/30 16:22My first was this upbeat, pseudo-angsty distillation of my limited understanding of my limited understanding of the world at the time. I called it Amateur.

Re:the first song you ever wrote... - 2007/01/30 16:31I was 14. For the life of me, I can't remember the title. But I remember writing the lyrics on a sheet of paper during a high school class. It was very serious and stuff. It kinda sucked. I think I only knew very basic open chords at that point and nothing about theory so the chords were probably E, A, G, C, D, F, B or something really crappy sounding.
The first song I actually wrote and recorded was for my band, Welcome to Brookhollow, called "These are the Words." It's still a fave among the fans (ie - my family).

No doubt I was just a little guy too...maybe 7 or 8. Something on ukelele...too small to hold a guitar.
I've never held an instrument without trying to write a song, or remember one I'd already written. Makes me a bad guitar player, but I'll accept the trade-off.
The first poem I can remember setting to music was an earnest pre-teen (8?) commentary on religion and avarice that I was certain would shake the foundations of both Theology and Music. My grandmother said it was 'cute'.
As a military brat moving around a lot, I got a lot of mileage out of one song I'd re-write by just changing the girl's name.
I uncovered a lot of my earliest scratch recordings and have digitized them. A few of them were actually pretty good.

Re:the first song you ever wrote... - 2007/01/30 20:43The first song I ever wrote was a lullaby to myself. I would sing myself to sleep with this earworm of a song (sort of a cross between the "Twilight Zone" theme and the "Jeopardy" theme) whose only words were "Lee-lee, lau-lau, lee-lee, lau-lau, give a little clap... give a little clap". Repeat that, forever. I would sing the song to myself, quietly, and I would hold my right hand up to my cheek, clenched in a fist of sorts. The thumb would stick out, and on every quarter note, I would flick my right earlobe with my thumb. When I got to the part "give a little clap", I would actually have to clap. While I was trying to sing my self to sleep, I was clapping. It happens twice every verse, and the verses are like 10 seconds long. It's basically non-stop clapping with some earlobe flicking thrown in for good measure. I don't know how I ever got to sleep.
My first song that I actually remember writing I wrote when I was 16. It was called "Dianne", and it was about some guy who was totally squirrelled up over some girl, and he writes her this poem, which doesn't work, and he starts obsessing over her and ends up stalking her and trying to kill her. Notable lyrics include: "I'll sit alone in the dark/To stab you as you walk your dog through the park/I don't think I can stand to see you with another man/Dianne." It is an awful, awful embarrassment of a song that needs a bridge, and possible handclaps and earlobe flicking.

i had a factory-type job and one day, one of my co-workers (a schoolmate of mine) decided to take the forklift for a spin - with hilariously disastrous result.
the song was about that.
the music i wrote with a friend. i played bass (my instrument of choice at the time) and my friend played guitar.
man, that was a long time ago...

There were some "instrumentals" b4 that but I'm not sure if a kid trying to make good sounds come out of a guitar count as actual songs...

Re:the first song you ever wrote... - 2007/01/31 00:35I can't remember the lyrics but I do know that it was recorded with a handheld tape recorder being held to a speaker while i rapped...I actuallt still have the tape. The sound quality is bad, real bad.

haha! Oh, I KNOW it was annoying. Even the other kids couldn't take it! If there is one thing I have consistently done with my music, it's annoy people.

This. The good thing is that I knew it sucked and could then commence with writing things that didn't suck quite so much. Thank the gods all the teen angst is well out of my system. Now I have adult angst. Ha.
