Roughly Pre-Mastered - 2008/03/02 20:26 Late Friday night, I cobbled together our RPM album, Roughly Produced Masterpieces. I did little in the way of mastering, aside from deciding on a track order, getting the tracks to sound somewhat balanced in volume with respect to each other (which is pretty tricky for such a diverse album!), and applying a very modest amount of hard limiting to bring the overall album volume up. The end result was sent to RPM Challenge.

However, Ill be taking the next day or so to polish it up as best possible for VUAs official release of this album, in a few days or so. So, this thread is for posting two things:
1. for the contributing Very Us Artists to put their two cents in regarding the album mix as before I go to remaster it, and
2. for voting on which track should be our "preferred track for listening party." Anyone can vote on this. Each track can be heard by clicking on it from the list below.

- John

Re:Roughly Pre-Mastered - 2008/03/02 21:43 Mr. Glide! Oh, happy day!

Darren Baker's entry is phenomenal, but probably not the best party play song. It's more of an "I'm about to embark on an amazing journey" song.

My vote is for Maddy and Nancy's song, because it's got one thing that I've heard very very little of in the entire challenge: Strong Harmonies.

Re:Roughly Pre-Mastered - 2008/03/02 23:45 Diverse is right!

As for a preferred track... er, I haven't got a clue. As far as I can tell from one listen, there isn't really one track that could represents the project as it's all so different (if that's what you were looking for) - but if I have to go for one it would probably be Pzychotropic.

The sound is fine - well, it sounds fine to me anyway (except maybe the Hairwolf and Brian Wilbur Grundstrom tracks are slightly louder than everything else).

Roughly Pre-Mastered (+ vote for our pref'd track) - 2008/03/03 00:18 Yeah, there's no way any one track on this collection could possible represent the album as a whole. So basically, it's just a matter of which piece would be best to show off during the listening party. I guess it should be one that would have the best chance of making the most people want to come check out our album. But hey, if you've got better criteria for picking, by all means...

Meanwhile, I decided to open this voting up to everyone. You can now click on the tracks from the list at the top of this thread to hear a short sample of each one. So let's hear it, people!

Re:Roughly Pre-Mastered - 2008/03/04 21:36 really nice track here...and Mick you cease to amaze with the deep vibes!

.....but I have already wrote to Pzychotropic on how much I dig that track...and for me, I would like to see one chalked up for psychedelic rock....plus I don't think he actually got to finish the album....

really cool combination of sounds on this disc...no way to get all the sounds for sure

Re:Roughly Pre-Mastered - 2008/03/04 21:43 And for those who want to hear more of "Rebel, Patriot, Malefactor", it's actually featured in this week's Downcast, which celebrates the release of my friend Jeff's first major novel.

Re:Roughly Pre-Mastered - 2008/03/05 02:16 I'm really impressed with what I've been able to listen to of this album. Makes me wish I'd had the time to be a part of it.

Re:Roughly Pre-Mastered - 2008/03/06 00:28 Whoops! should of done this some time ago...busy, busy and busy!
l'll put my vote in for red+purple=magenta, but I was bowled over by quite a few of the tracks. Rounding Perihelion Molniya - cool. Ricky Plays Music - phun!

Overall I've been happy to have made my contribution to this quirky little collection and hope to maybe make a contribution to other projects as they come into being.
Cheers everbody

I counselled Mr. Carpentron on whether to do a song for VUA or contribute to my side project, clique. It's always a boon to have a Carpentron track on your album, (even more so when it's a Carpentron album!), but I have to say that this is already a pretty fantastic album, and clique hugely benefited from what he seems to think was a meagre contribution. So, I for one, am glad the way things turned out.

Re:Roughly Pre-Mastered - 2008/03/08 20:19 Okay, so the RPM staff has been asking about settling on a preferred track. So it's time to tally the votes!

1 vote each went and Pzychotropic's "Rising Pzychotropic Moonlight" and Jeremy Simmons' "relax, poor mind."

2 votes went to to Josh's "red+purple=magenta"

but...
3 votes went to Maddy and Nancy's "Right Past Me." And so we have our winner. Woo-hoo!

I've also been getting pestered about releasing this album, which was originally slated for last Tuesday. And so, I declare that on or before this next Tuesday, March 10th, Roughly Produced Masterpieces will be hitting the...um...download buttons?

The Very Us Artists' RPM album: download it now! - 2008/03/13 07:37 In case you haven't heard yet, our RPM album, Roughly Produced Masterpieces, is finally released and freely available for download. You can find it all (MP3s, lyric sheets, write-ups on most pieces, etc.) right here:

veryusartists.com

There's nearly something for everybody on this one, from classical to heavy metal, purely acoustic to purely electronic, and everything in between. There's tracks from "famous" RPMers such as Michelangelo, Joshua Wentz, and Vivian Circle, as well as "who?!?" RPMers such as the brilliant Darren Baker and the unstoppable Di.J. Noizepunk.

Oh, and then there's jewels in our crown, ex-Blackmore's Night singers Maddy and Nancy.

You can read more about this album (as well as some of the other RPM albums made by its contributors) here on our blog: here.

Or, just go right to the music: Roughly Produced Masterpieces

Enjoy!

Re:The Very Us Artists' RPM album: download it now - 2008/03/14 22:49 I'm hoping I can make it to the listening party so that I can hear some of this there rather than around here with kids climbing on me.
