100 tones - 2008/02/19 20:34 Perl-generated Csound score of 100 sinusoidal oscillators, all with a different slowly, linearly changing frequency (in my profile). What do you think?

cheers all,

Matt

Re:100 tones - 2008/02/19 20:40 Now I'll know what to listen to if I ever decide I want my brain to explode.

But seriously... not exactly "easy listening" but I appreciate the experimentation with the physical and mathematical properties of sound waves, and I've dabbled with some of that stuff myself.

Reminds me of this: http://asa.aip.org/demo27.html

Re:100 tones - 2008/02/19 21:06 I smelled that sound once before.

You, sir, should download gAlan and Supercollider right away.

Re:100 tones - 2008/02/19 21:31 It sounds like a randomized shepard tone. Pretty cool concept demo but I wouldn't go so far as to call it a piece yet. I'm not saying you can't, just saying I wouldn't

I thought it was interesting how the tones occasionally ALMOST line up into some kind of harmonic structure, then immediately diverge.

edit: quick (cool?) idea: crossfade this into an actual sample, then phase vocode it into 100 bands and mix it in somewhere so that it morphs into a voice or something.

Anyway, interesting stuff!

Re:100 tones - 2008/02/20 08:33 Thanks for the comments. Some replies:

The best praise possible. Thanks!

I smelled that sound once before.

I really don't know what that means. But I often think of how to convert one sensory input into another kind: sounds into images and images into sounds being the two most popular. Smell into sound, or vice versa would be awesome. What would the smell of coffee sound like? The smell of cat food? Hmmm.

You, sir, should download gAlan and Supercollider right away.

Ah yes, I'm familiar with the Supercollider. Thanks for the suggestion though.

not exactly "easy listening"

Is anyone looking for "easy listening"?

Liking the track too

Thanks!

Pretty cool concept demo but I wouldn't go so far as to call it a piece yet.

Why not?

cheers,

Matt

Re:100 tones - 2008/02/20 11:58 Hey, no fair! This isn't anything new! You just sampled the engine noises from Pole Position and RoadBlasters and laid them over each other!

Just kidding. I like it. But then again, we have had a 12-minute feedback jam on an album previously and it came out sounding similarly.
