Help: encoding - 2008/02/11 21:13 Hey all,

I have a much-too-big AIFF file that I'd like to post. How do I encode it to be a smaller size? And can I just change the file extension from AIFF to MP3?

I'm working on a year-old iMac with Leopard OS.

Thanks!

A Wind-Up Bird

Re:Help: encoding - 2008/02/11 21:20 Open the file in Garage Band which should have been included with your mac. You can then choose to export it as MP3 from the file menu.

Re:Help: encoding - 2008/02/11 21:25 Open your file with iTunes.
Click on the file/songname so it is highlighted in iTunes and go to the Advanced menu at the top of the screen.

If you see the option to "Convert selection to mp3" you can do that. If it says "convert to AAC" or "convert to Lossless" then you can change it in the iTunes Preferences.

Go to the iTunes menu at the top of the screen, and open your iTunes preferences. In the Advanced tab choose Importing and then choose your "Import using MP3 converter" and the bitrate. 160 kbps or 192 is generally good.

when it has converted just drag it to the desktop so you can select it easily for uploading places or opening with other programs should you so wish.

;~)

this is only an option in GB 4 (iLife 08) and you may have GB3 on your Mac, in which case you have o use iTunes (or some other program like audacity etc)

Re:Help: encoding - 2008/02/11 22:29 If his mac came with Leopard, it will have Garage Band 4 anyway. Mine is marked 3.0.5 (104.10) since I upgraded from tiger myself and only does m4a, but you're probably right that iTunes is more widely available. After switching to Logic Express 8, I've already forgotten what was missing from Garage Band 3.

Re:Help: encoding - 2008/02/12 22:00 Hey Gumbo!

It worked! Thanks so much for your help. I love my Mac, but it seems to keep some stuff well-hidding.

Muchas Gracias... and if you'd like to check out the end result, I'd love some feedback: http://www.rpmchallenge.com/component/option,com_comprofiler/task,userProfile/Itemid,296/

Re:Help: encoding - 2008/02/12 22:23 heheh you put up a link to the profile of the person who is logged in.

Here in th eforums I can click on the (tiny) person icon under your name to get to your profile.

I used that link in my forum signature last year and then forum signatures got disabled and i can't change it so I had this signature which sent everyone to their own profile

It's gone now

THANK YOU DAVE

But I digress - I'll go check your song.
