Hey everyone, thanks for the encouragement!
I have a few thoughts...
1. The thing that is probably deterring me most about singing right now is that I feel like I've gotten to a pretty good place with everything else I'm doing in my music, and that weak vocals would just ruin the instrumental tracks. Mostly I need to just get over that, I guess.
2. One thing I could try is producing instrumental and vocal versions of the same tracks. I was thinking about reworking some of my RPM tracks from this year with vocals, especially the ones that came off as somewhat incomplete in their current versions (most notably, "Notated Scorns" ).
3. Multiple vocal parts help to blur the limitations of any one voice. So I'll (definitely) multitrack and (possibly) do harmonies. The best example of this I can think of is Steve Howe's voice in Yes. Steve's a pretty mediocre singer (as anyone who's heard his singing on his first solo album can attest), but in the context of Yes's 3-part harmonies he's fine. Then again, he's in there with two very strong singers (Jon Anderson and Chris Squire), and with me it would just be three Steve Howes... but multitracking the vocals will still probably help.
4. I need to stop thinking about everything I record as being headed for some highly-polished finished product. There's no reason I couldn't start working on vocal tracks that I mostly keep to myself and simultaneously keep doing the instrumental stuff I've been sharing with the world, until I'm ready to start releasing the vocal tracks to the public.
(Edit: Someone has GOT to do something about the quotation mark/close paren combination turning into a smiley.)
