This year, being my second RPM year, I was walking in with some experience from last year. That experience was mostly about the realization of how RPM can really help you define and overcome hurdles and personal challenges in your art.
Last year, killing the internal editor was my personal challenge...done, did it...he's buried somewhere in the backyard. This year, it was to identify exactly how inspiration hits me, and to see if it's possible to revisit that same "feel" on another day. Film inspires me alot, I always leave a movie with a certain mood. So, that's what I did, picked a bunch of great films...watching them over the course of the month. After each viewing, I would just go and hit record and go with the Muse, in total free jam "stream of conciousness" type playing.
I learned alot about my new gear, my habits, my styles...or sometimes lack thereof, and many other things. completing with a 17 song CD is considered a successful RPM month in my books.
This year's disc also marks the recording debut of my oldest son, Zack. He is 11 years old, and while just starting out on guitar, he was originally going to lay down some rhythm guitar for me on a track. Well, he certainly got in the spirit of RPM as well and ended up challenging himself with not only the rhythm guitar, but lead, bass and synth as well. His track (#15 "Zax Ax Attax") on the CD is all him, only the drums and editing were done by me.
It was great to be able to challenge myself again this year and also enjoy the great musical and growing experience with my son.
