The Scope is an alternative newsweekly in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, and we're here to encourage bands and musicians in our area. Bring the noise!
The Scope has signed on as an official sponsor of the RPM Challenge, and we’re stoked. We’ll be the regional hub for Newfoundland and Labrador.
Forget inspiration, you’ve got a deadline.
New Hampshire’s The Wire is the alternative newsweekly that first
put this challenge out back in 2006. As it happens, 2006 was the same
year The Scope was a-brewin’ and we were looking across the planet for
inspiring alt-weeklies. ...We discovered The Wire,
an alt-weekly in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. After looking at their website and at a few copies, we
noticed a lot of similarity between what the paper we wanted to create in St. John’s
and what they were already doing there. They had a similar population
breakdown, they had a similar style, and they were doing well.
When we happened upon The Wire, they were right in the middle of their first ever RPM, and it was going gangbusters.
So we were like, “Hey, we’ve got a long, cold, dreary February, and a
huge population of basement musicians. We could do an RPM Challenge for
St. John’s!”
And so it goes.
