I am a 29-year-old, independent musician from the Grand Rapids area. Song-writing, playing guitar, and performing my own music are quite new endeavors in my life. Music, however, has always been a large part of my life. I come from a family of musicians, especially on my mother's side. As far as singing, I trained and performed classically on scholarship at Kalamazoo College from 1996 to 2000. I am not sure what genre of music my creations fall under, but I do know that being engaged in this creative process is the greatest source of joy and love in my life right now other than the people I love in my life. As far as the recording process of this project......Let it be known that I am a high school History teacher... And we are recording this CD in my classroom!!
My 23-year-old, baby brother, Bill Naill (William the Astonishing) plays drums with me. I love the fact that this new hobby/activity/passion is making it so that I get to spend more time with him.
A senior student, Austin Kane, is also very involved in this project. Austin was a student of mine last year in my Global Studies III class. Austin is not only providing the recording equipment and mixing software for this project, but he is also giving his own personal time to record with me after school, on the weekends, and then working on the mix more at home!
I can't wait to get started and play around with these new songs and sounds floating around in my head and get them on some more stable medium. I am so glad that NPR is providing us with this opportunity and deadline - So thank you, NPR, for providing this challenge - It is proving to be an experience of incredibly positive energy, learning, beauty, and joy.

Andrea Naill: Vocals, Guitar, and Keyboard and Obsessive CD Mixer
Bill Naill (William the Astonishing): Played the congas on track two.
Billy was supposed to be on almost all the songs doing full drums, but we simply ran out of time and couldnt' coordinate. We actually recorded drums for three of the songs and spent a lot of time doing those drum recordings and then just ran out of time to use them for the cd I turned in........So those drum recordings will go onto the "real" and finished version of this album - he rocked those songs - you will just have to imagine :P
Austin Kane: Sparta High School Student who acted as recording/audio engineer - he provided all the recording equipment and did some mixing and taught me a heck of a lot about Garage Band and how to do it myself. |
