About

Description:

This will be my first attempt at writing some dance songs. We have always been a lo-fi rock band but I just acquired some new equipment that lends itself to a more electronic twist. So we will see how that works out. This will also be the first time I have ever recorded digitally, so we will see what the major differences are between tape and bits.

Okay so I just finished and the album is hardly dancy at all. Still sounds like our lo-fi rock style, just recorded slightly better. I had fun!

Group Members: Andrew Myers, Mark Latta and some random arrangement of robots and paperweights...

Band Bio: A self-described power trio comprised of guitarist Andrew Myers, bassist Kevin Angell and drummer (and Standard Recording label head) Mark Latta, Red Queen Hypothesis (RQH) makes no-frills garage pop with an attitude that splits the difference between comic-book nerd and slacker punk. This recording features Myers with Graham Wood and Jason Henn, both of multiple bands of their own. On "Contorted in Deep Space," RQH occasionally simulates its influences with jarring accuracy: "Make the Tape Go" sounds like the Dismemberment Plan aping the Replacements; "Feedback," sounds like pre-4AD Mountain Goats; "Miles of Waiting" sounds like it could have been an outtake from the Guided By Voices masterpiece "Alien Lanes." Of course, everybody sounds like somebody, and it's to the band's credit that RQH sounds like several really terrific bands, including The Dead Milkmen, Fountains of Wayne and They Might Be Giants. Nothing wrong with that. And while RQH shares sensibilities with a number of catchy, clever and punchy rock bands, the group puts enough personality into its music to make it distinctive. If you like your music hummable, super-charged and fuzzed-out, and if you like your lyrics irreverent (with a wry vocal delivery to match), then you'll enjoy "Contorted in Deep Space." Furthermore, if you're a local music fan who hasn't yet heard RQH, I can't think of a better starting point than here. Red Queen Hypothesis is the flagship band of a collective of midwesternites stewing in midwesternness called the Rowntree Collective. Since moving to the big city of Indianapolis RQH has birthed themselves from the placental comfort of the 4-Track lo-fi sound to working with actual professionals. Andrew Myers has been the anchor of the band for the duration, surrounding himself with an innumerable variety of musicians, ranging from a 13 piece with dueling trombones down to their current line-up of the power trio. Mark Latta of the Standard Recording Company has recently been recruited to beat the skins because Shivers knocked up the former drummer, so she had to quit. Then Shivers joined the band instead of her. What a jerk. He plays left handed bass guitar. Oh, and there was something about this Tow Truck Guy at some point too... and then Shivers just had his last show. We need a new bassist.
